2026 Solar Eclipse and Moon Phenomena Anticipated Across Europe

On 12 August 2026 a solar eclipse will pass over Europe, offering a total eclipse within a narrow band that includes parts of Spain, Iceland and Greenland. Observers in the totality zone—such as León, the Asturian coast, Santander and the Bilbao area—are expected to host over ten million visitors, while hotels in the region are already fully booked. In Germany the eclipse will be visible only as a partial event, with the greatest obscuration of about 90 % expected in Konstanz and Freiburg and slightly lower levels in cities like Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg.

Separately, several notable lunar events are slated for 2026. A “strawberry moon” will appear on 30 June, giving the Moon a reddish hue. The year will also feature a supermoon—when the Moon is closest to Earth and appears up to 14 % larger and 30 % brighter—followed later by a minimoon, when it is farthest and appears smaller. These phenomena are highlighted as part of the broader interest in upcoming astronomical spectacles.
