Spain & Europe prepare for Aug 12 2026 eclipse
Overview
Spain’s inter‑ministerial commission is coordinating safety, traffic and wildfire‑risk plans for the 12 August total solar eclipse, the first to cross the Iberian Peninsula since 1912. Protección Civil and the Centre for Emergency Coordination will monitor the event, and only ISO‑12312‑2‑certified glasses are deemed safe; CE‑marked glasses are being distributed free in Valencia and other towns. Municipalities along the 290‑km path—from Galicia through Castile‑León, the Basque Country, Navarre, Aragón, Madrid, Castilla‑La Mancha, Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearics—offer free scientific programmes, planetarium shows and cultural events, including an eclipse day at Castellón Planetarium with concerts. Gijón’s LABoral Centre will host a LightSound device that turns sunlight fluctuations into sound for visually‑impaired visitors. Tourism is surging: rural houses in Valladolid report 90 % occupancy and rates up to €800 per night; hotels in Lleida and Zaragoza are near full capacity, and flight searches for northern Spanish airports have jumped nearly 100 %. Scientific collaborations continue, including the Ecoeclipse animal‑sound study and the NATE telescope‑network rehearsal in Palencia with Spanish, Moroccan and U.S. partners. Czech planetariums will livestream partial phases, while Germany will see a partial eclipse (84‑93 % coverage) and has closed the Hannover Observatory for safety. Trasmed’s cruise ship Ciudad de Granada will sail between Valencia and Ibiza, offering onboard workshops and talks by the University of Valencia’s astronomy department. Organisers expect up to two million spectators, prompting extensive transport, accommodation and safety coordination across Spain and the wider region. The eclipse’s track also crosses Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia and a small part of Portugal, creating a rare “sunset eclipse” in mainland Europe. Safety officials repeat the need for certified glasses; in Germany the Hannover Observatory will not hold a public viewing because the Sun will be low on the horizon.
