2026 Solar Eclipse to Be Observed in Germany and Spain

On 12 August 2026 a total solar eclipse will pass over northern Spain and the Balearic Islands before moving across the North Atlantic. The total phase begins around 19:00 CET and lasts about two minutes at its maximum, ending near the Balearics around 20:30 CET.

In Germany the eclipse will be visible as a deep partial event, with coverage ranging from about 84 % in Berlin and Hamburg to roughly 93 % on the southern lake district. The partial phase starts around 19:14 CET in Berlin, reaches its maximum at about 20:08 CET, and ends with sunset around 20:54 CET. Astronomer Björn Voss of Hamburg Planetarium described the sight as “the Moon’s silhouette seeming to ‘devour’ the Sun.”

The next total eclipse over German territory will not occur until 3 September 2081, making this 2026 event the most significant solar eclipse viewable in the region for decades.
