Spain readies for total solar eclipse on Aug 12 2026
A total solar eclipse will cross northern Spain on 12 August 2026, the first total eclipse over the Iberian Peninsula since 1912. The narrow path of totality runs from Galicia in the northwest to the Balearic Islands in the east, lasting about one to two minutes in any given location.
Municipalities are preparing large‑scale public events. The town of Prades will reserve 1 000 parking spaces and restrict forest roads to control visitor flow. León, in partnership with ESA, will host a free exhibition at the Palacio de Exposiciones with certified eclipse glasses and interactive science workshops. The Madrid region has identified 52 towns, including Buitrago del Lozoya, as official observation sites and will hold a festival there.
Ponferrada plans a two‑zone viewing set around its medieval castle, expecting up to 20 000 spectators. Other towns such as Mos (Herville) will combine astronomical talks with music, food and night‑time activities. A "Eclipse Wine Day" will be held at Bodegas Luis Cañas in Rioja Alavesa, offering wine tastings and certified glasses.
Authorities are coordinating traffic diversion, parking reservations, and civil‑protection plans. ESA will broadcast the event live, and free certified eclipse glasses will be distributed at many venues to ensure safe viewing across the country.
