Allied Democratic Forces attacks in Ituri, DRC kill at least 31 civilians
Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militants linked to the Islamic State carried out a series of attacks in the Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo between 22 July and 27 July 2026. Civil‑society leader Jospin Paluku reported that at least 31 civilians were killed in the Babila‑Babombi chiefdom of Mambasa territory during that period. Separate civil‑society reports from the same area indicate that more than 190 civilians have been killed by ADF/NALU attacks since January 2026. The attacks occurred in villages such as Njiapanda‑Bela and other localities in the chiefdom, where the group also imposes taxes on residents. The armed forces of the DRC and Uganda are conducting joint operations against the ADF, but the insurgents continue to carry out raids. Local leaders have called on the Congolese government to intensify security measures and restore state authority in the region. The violence is unrelated to the conflict between the DRC army and the M23 rebel movement.
