34-year-old man killed in fatal bear attack near Segesvár, Transylvania
A 34-year-old man died on Saturday after a brown bear attacked him near the village of Küküllőprod, close to Segesvár in Romania's Transylvania region. Rescue crews arrived after an emergency call and found the victim already deceased, with clear bear‑bite marks on his body.
Local officials said bear attacks have become more frequent in the area, citing several recent fatal incidents. The regional government highlighted the lack of a long‑term prevention plan and called for better regulation of the bear population. In April, Romania's parliament approved a proposal to double the annual hunting quota for brown bears to 859 animals for 2026‑2027, aiming to curb attacks, but the law's implementation has been delayed by a presidential constitutional veto.
