Metro 2039 set for February 2027 release
Ukrainian studio 4A Games has unveiled new details for Metro 2039, the fourth mainline installment in the Metro series, during Gamescom 2026. The game is now scheduled for release in February 2027 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Set in Moscow in the year 2039, the narrative follows a new protagonist known as “The Stranger,” a former Spartan who returns to the underground tunnels. The story, developed in collaboration with author Dmitry Glukhovsky, explores themes of tyranny and freedom under the authoritarian Novoreich regime, led by the character Hunter.
Gameplay is expected to return to the series' roots, emphasizing claustrophobic tunnel environments, stealth, and survival horror, while still incorporating larger areas for exploration. Developers noted that the ongoing war in Ukraine has significantly influenced the game's tone and development process. A Collector’s Edition featuring a replica Spartan helmet has also been announced.
