500‑kg bomb discovered in Hungary's Danube near Kisoroszi

A bomb weighing roughly 500 kilograms was recovered from the riverbed of the Danube near the Hungarian village of Kisoroszi, about 40 km north of Budapest. The explosive device, believed to be leftover from World II, was located as a result of the river’s record‑low water level caused by an extreme summer drought.

Hungarian army pyrotechnicians safely lifted the bomb from the water and removed it, after which local authorities closed the surrounding area and urged residents and visitors to stay away until the site was declared safe. The incident is one of several recent discoveries of historic artefacts and unexploded ordnance along the Hungarian stretch of the Danube, including two firearms found in Budapest earlier this year.
