Danube low water exposes relics, cuts power

Overview

The unprecedented drop in Danube flow that began in late July 2026 continues to expose historic and paleontological objects across the basin and now also strains regional energy supply. Earlier in the month low water near Opatovac (Croatia) revealed a sunken cargo‑vessel stern, while downstream wrecks – a 1937 coal‑laden hull at Apatin, a WWII‑era warship near Mohács (Hungary), and the scuttled German fleet at Prahovo (Serbia) – became fully visible. The 16th‑century Ottoman bridge remains at Szolnok (Hungary) and WWII ordnance caches in Hungary were documented. On 30 July firefighters retrieved a submerged automobile near Szob (Hungary) and mammoth remains were recovered in Bulgaria and near Ryahovo.

The same low‑water conditions have forced cuts to hydro‑electric output in Austria – about 30 % below the long‑term average – and led Verbund to report a profit decline of more than a third for the first half of the year. Hungary’s Paks nuclear plant was shut down completely, removing roughly 2 GW of capacity because cooling‑water intakes could not be met. Germany reported declining levels on the Danube, Rhine and Elbe, prompting municipal water‑use restrictions and a new nationwide low‑water information system. Officials estimate that the drought‑related damage could reach €625 billion by 2050.

Navigation remains severely constrained: cruise itineraries are rerouted, tourist traffic shifted to buses, and cargo barges operate at roughly 30‑40 % of normal capacity. Authorities in Croatia, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Austria, and Germany continue safety inspections, heritage preservation and scientific documentation while river levels stay unusually low.
