Former Greek Candidate Arrested for Arson in Corinthia

A 57‑year‑old woman who previously ran as a parliamentary candidate for the Party of Freedom was arrested in Corinthia after a fire broke out on dry grass near a forest. Video footage captured her walking with her dog, bending down in the vegetation, and then a blaze ignited moments later. Police presented the video to her, and she gave conflicting explanations – first saying she had dropped her phone handset, then claiming she stopped to remove a thorn from her dog’s paw. Authorities concluded she deliberately started the fire using a naked flame. She was taken into custody in an auto‑detection operation and is expected to appear before a prosecutor. This case is the eighth alleged intentional arson of 2026, prompting a broader crackdown on fire violations. Health Minister Adonis Georgiades publicly linked the incident to political tensions, noting her candidacy background.
