Greece July 2026 Fires, Arrests & Ongoing Response

Entities: Greece · Greek Fire Service · West Attica Arson Crimes Investigation Unit · Aspropyrgos · Grevena region

Overview

Greek fire services sustained intensive operations in late July 2026. On 24 July the fire‑service’s arson‑investigation unit arrested a 19‑year‑old Canadian in Evros and a 69‑year‑old resident in Grevena for negligence‑caused blazes, bringing the year‑to‑date total to 221 auto‑ex parte arrests, 608 fines totalling €858,177 and confirming that about 88 % of wildfires stem from negligence. The same day a warehouse fire erupted in Markopoulo and a forest fire in Evros’s Lefkimi area, both tackled with dozens of firefighters, engines and aerial water‑dropping aircraft. On 25 July a forest fire near Logades, Ioannina required 22 firefighters, a hiking detachment, engines, a helicopter and municipal water trucks; the next day a blaze in Basiliká, Fthiotida was contained by 43 firefighters, 12 engines, three aircraft and a helicopter. Minister Evangelos Tournas noted 51 forest fires in a 24‑hour period and 17 simultaneous incidents in Central Macedonia, urging the ministry to cut fire occurrences and redeploy resources as needed.

A fire‑risk map issued on 27 July classified the nationwide danger as medium, advising the public to avoid outdoor work and barbecues. The same day a forest fire in Agios Dimitrios, Kozani mobilised 20 firefighters, five engines, a foot‑patrol unit, volunteers and a helicopter, while parallel blazes in Monolithos (Thessaloniki), Vasilika and Kalidrimo (Fthiotida) were handled with larger crews but caused no injuries. Greece recorded 25 agro‑forest fires in the preceding 24 hours; 22 were extinguished swiftly. In Attica, an Aspropyrgos fire was fully contained within 20 minutes by 22 firefighters, eight engines, one helicopter and municipal water tankers; an arson‑investigation level was activated and drones were used for monitoring.
