6.1‑Magnitude Earthquake Hits Japan's Iwate Prefecture, No Tsunami Warning

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the east coast of Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan early Sunday (local time 05:21), at a depth of roughly 40 km. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported no tsunami warning. The quake’s strongest shaking reached intensity 6 on the Japanese scale in Hachikami and Hachinohe towns of Aomori Prefecture. No damage was reported at nearby nuclear facilities, including the Higashidori plant and the Onagawa complex.

The event follows a magnitude 7.2 quake in the same region the previous day that injured at least ten people, as well as several smaller tremors near Tokyo (magnitudes 5.6 and 5.8). Authorities noted that while objects can fall and windows may crack at intensities below 6, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage from this Sunday quake.
