Japan Seismic Activity Late June–Mid July 2026

Overview

The offshore seismic sequence that began on 23 June intensified on 24 June with a 6.9‑magnitude quake off Iwate, producing Shindo‑6+ shaking in Aomori and several injuries. Aftershocks of magnitude 5.7‑6.1 continued through 28 June, prompting safety checks on railways, power plants and nuclear facilities; no tsunami warnings were issued. Super‑typhoon Mekkhala (downgraded to a tropical storm) and Tropical Storm Higos forced evacuations for more than 2 million residents, cancelled hundreds of flights and train services, and halted production at Toyota’s Kyushu plant.

On 30 June a magnitude 2.8 quake struck Miyazaki Prefecture and later a magnitude 4.5 offshore event east of Aomori produced light shaking in Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate, without triggering a tsunami warning. A magnitude 6.4 quake off Miyakojima on 3 July prompted a brief tsunami forecast predicting only minor sea‑level changes, with no evacuations or injuries reported.

From 25 June to 4 July the Japan Meteorological Agency recorded 45 earthquakes of magnitude 1 or higher, including magnitude‑6.3 off Iwate, magnitude‑6.2 in Yamanashi and magnitude‑6.0 in Aomori that caused injuries. The agency reiterated that the concentration of strong quakes during the rainy season raises landslide risk.

A further minor event occurred on 14 July when a magnitude 2.4 quake struck the Aizu area of Fukushima Prefecture. The tremor reached Shindo 2, caused no damage and generated no tsunami threat. Authorities recorded the quake as a localized, low‑impact aftershock.
