6.1‑Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northeastern Japan, No Tsunami Warning

A magnitude‑6.1 earthquake hit the offshore area of Iwate prefecture in northeastern Japan at 07:25 local time on Sunday. The quake’s hypocenter was 40 km deep and was felt across a wide region, including neighboring Aomori. Authorities reported no injuries, fatalities or significant damage and did not issue a tsunami warning.

Japanese officials warned residents of possible aftershocks and secondary hazards such as landslides, noting that recent weather conditions could increase risk. The event follows a recent series of strong tremors in the area, including a magnitude‑7.2 quake a few days earlier and a 5.6‑magnitude tremor near Mount Fuji.
