6.7‑Magnitude Earthquake Hits Sulawesi, Indonesia, Causes Light Damage

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Sulawesi’s central region on June 16, with the epicenter about 42 km southeast of the city of Palu and a depth of roughly 10 km. The Indonesian agency BMKG and the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the quake and reported no tsunami risk. Strong shaking lasted more than a minute, prompting scattered damage and the evacuation of patients from several hospitals, though no casualties were immediately reported.

The event revived memories of the devastating 2018 magnitude 7.5 quake that hit Palu, but authorities said the current quake caused only light damage and the potential for aftershocks remains.
