Overview

The seismic swarm initiated by the June 8 Mw 7.7 Sulawesi Sea earthquake intensified in mid-August 2026. On August 15, a powerful Mw 7.7 earthquake struck the Flores region at a shallow depth of 10 to 15 km, centered near Nagekeo Regency. The event triggered tsunami warnings for East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi, which the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) later lifted. Tsunami waves reached heights of 2.5 meters in northern Flores.

Casualties and displacement figures have risen. While earlier reports cited 111 deaths, the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) now reports 136 casualties, noting that 88 deaths were indirect fatalities occurring during or after medical treatment. However, new BNPB data reveals that 94 people died while staying in earthquake refugee camps in Flores, a figure nearly double the 48 deaths reported as direct results of the tremors. The Ministry of Health noted most camp fatalities were elderly individuals with chronic illnesses. This has sparked criticism regarding sanitation, medical services, and tent facilities, with legal advocates from Walhi suggesting a potential failure to meet obligations under Law Number 24 of 2007. The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) is calling for an audit of refugee management.

As of late September 2026, seismic activity persists. BMKG has recorded between 14,993 and 15,156 aftershocks, with the largest reaching Mw 6.2. Wijayanto, BMKG Director of Earthquake and Tsunami, identified these as shallow earthquakes caused by the Flores Back-Arc Thrust.
