Indonesia seismic activity: June–August 2026
Overview
The seismic swarm initiated by the June 8 Mw 7.7 Sulawesi Sea earthquake continued through August 2026. The initial June 8 event triggered tsunami warnings and minor sea-level anomalies across North Sulawesi and North Maluku. Following this, a Mw 5.2 quake struck near Karatung Island on June 13, followed by a devastating Mw 6.7 earthquake on June 16 near Palu, Central Sulawesi. The June 16 event caused significant damage to over 2,000 households, killed at least three people, and injured dozens, prompting a state of emergency in the Sigi district.
Activity persisted through July with various tremors, including a Mw 6.2 quake off Halmahera on July 3, a Mw 5.5 in the Sunda Strait on July 7, and a Mw 5.4 in Buol on July 12. On July 24, Mw 5.4 and Mw 5.7–5.8 quakes occurred near Enggano Island and Ternate. A Mw 5.3 thrust-fault event near Kupang on July 26 caused public panic but no casualties.
In August, activity remained high. A Mw 5.3 quake struck the Sangihe Islands on August 14. This was followed by a powerful Mw 7.7 earthquake on August 15 near Flores Island. The Flores quake, occurring at a depth of 10 km, triggered tsunami warnings for East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi, with minor waves detected in Sikka and Labuan Bajo. Significant aftershocks, including magnitudes of 5.6, 5.9, and 6.1, were recorded following the Flores event.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) categorized several regions under ‘Siaga’ (Alert) status, including northern Manggarai, Ngada, West Manggarai, Ende, Sikka, Selayar, Jeneponto, and Bantaeng. The highest recorded wave reached 0.94 meters in Maurole, Ende. In Manggarai Timur, tremors caused structural damage, including the collapse of several homes.
