6.7‑Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Central Sulawesi, Indonesia

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia on 16 June 2026, with its epicenter 46 km east‑southeast of the city of Palu, the provincial capital of Central Sulawesi. The tremor lasted more than a minute and was followed by strong aftershocks measuring 5.2, 5.0 and 4.9 magnitude.

Scattered structural damage was reported in Palu, a city of about 400,000 residents. Hospitals moved patients, including those on IV drips, outdoors as a safety precaution. The quake occurred at a depth of roughly 10 km. Authorities noted that the region lies on several tectonic fault lines and experiences frequent seismic activity, recalling the deadly 2018 magnitude 7.5 quake that killed over 4,000 people in the same area.

No immediate casualty figures were released, but officials continue to assess damage and monitor aftershocks.
