Greek 6th Health Region manages ambulance outage and staffing disputes

The 6th Health Region in Greece is addressing two separate issues regarding medical services and staffing in the Peloponnese and Ionian islands.

In Messinia, the ambulance from the Agios Nikolaos Health Center was temporarily taken out of service following a traffic accident on August 27 while returning from Kalamata General Hospital. The 6th Health Region stated that alternative solutions were implemented to ensure coverage for the West Mani area, including the deployment of an ambulance from the Pylos Health Center. A second ambulance is expected to reinforce the area following technical inspections.

In Kefalonia, Panos Papanikolaou, General Secretary of the Federation of Hospital Doctors of Greece (OENGE), has issued a sharp criticism against the 6th Health Region administration. The dispute involves the sudden relocation of a rural doctor from the Sami Health Center to the Kefalonia General Hospital to cover on-call duties. Papanikolaou alleged that the decision, communicated on the same day it was to be implemented, caused significant personal hardship for the physician, who is a mother of two young children.
