7.8‑Magnitude Earthquake Hits Mindanao, Triggers 1‑Metre Tsunami

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the Mindanao region of the Philippines on 8 June 2026, with a depth of 55.2 km. The epicentre was located about 26 km southwest of Kablalan in Sarangani province. The tremor was followed by ten aftershocks ranging from 4.6 to 6.5 magnitude.

Tsunami waves reached up to 1.4 metres, prompting local authorities to issue evacuation orders. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged residents in vulnerable coastal areas to move to higher ground, and disaster‑response agencies were placed on standby. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology confirmed one fatality and several injuries.

Neighbouring Malaysia’s Meteorological Department also issued a tsunami advisory for Sabah in Borneo. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake and monitored subsequent aftershocks.
