Mindanao region faces new quakes and landslides
Overview
Recovery work after the June 8 offshore magnitude‑7.8 quake continues, but the Mindanao region has been hit by fresh seismic events. On 11 July 2026 a magnitude 5.4 quake struck off the Philippines amid a severe storm; heavy rainfall triggered landslides in the south that killed at least 15 people, adding to the humanitarian strain already caused by recent tremors, including a 5.8‑magnitude shock in early July and a 6.5‑magnitude event in late June.
Two days later, on 14 July, PHIVOLCS recorded a magnitude 5.3 tectonic quake in Davao Occidental, with instrumental intensity felt in General Santos City, Sarangani and nearby areas. Aftershocks—another 5.3 and a 4.5 in Sarangani—were linked to the June 2026 magnitude‑7.8 earthquake. A separate 4.2‑magnitude quake occurred in Occidental Mindoro but caused no significant impact.
Authorities are maintaining the early‑recovery plan approved in June, continuing cash‑for‑work, school rebuilding and health services, while PHIVOLCS and the DOST‑Walk‑the‑Fault program keep monitoring fault activity. The recent events have prompted calls to reinforce disaster‑risk funding and to integrate landslide‑risk measures into the ongoing reconstruction and preparedness efforts.
