80 nations warn of Houthi threats to Bab el-Mandeb and global trade

Approximately 80 nations have issued a joint statement at the United Nations warning that Houthi militia movements toward the Bab el-Mandeb strait pose significant risks to global shipping, maritime security, and international trade. The statement, read by Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdulatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, calls for the immediate and full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to ensure the safe and stable passage of vessels.

The signatory countries condemned the resumption of Houthi military operations, including attacks against Saudi Arabia and vessels in the Red Sea, describing such actions as reckless. The statement emphasized that maritime corridors must remain open and should not be used as tools for negotiation.

Furthermore, the declaration accused Iran of threatening international security and the freedom of navigation through its actions in the Strait of Hormuz. The international community expressed growing concern that escalating tensions in both the Red Sea and the Gulf could disrupt global energy security and supply chains.
