Bab al-Mandeb blockade and maritime security escalation

Overview

The Houthi movement declared an embargo on the Bab al‑Mandeb Strait on 31 July 2026, halting commercial traffic and threatening roughly 12% of global oil flow. In response, Saudi Arabia announced a 14‑nation maritime defence coalition, while Egypt is pursuing diplomatic de-escalation. On 3 September, fighting escalated significantly as Houthi rebels launched an offensive targeting the western Red Sea coast to seize Mocha. This surge resulted in over 120 deaths and the displacement of more than 900 families.

By 5 September, military tensions intensified with Yemeni aircraft conducting over 15 airstrikes against Houthi positions in Taiz and Al Hudaydah. Civilian casualties rose following a Houthi ballistic missile strike on a gathering on the Hayjat al-Abd road, which killed or injured 13 people, and sniper fire in Al-Kadha and Al-Rahba that wounded several children and a woman. Concurrently, Houthi forces reportedly seized control of Jabal al-Sheikh Said in the Maqbanah district. Amidst the fighting, Saudi Arabia provided new financial aid to the Central Bank of Yemen in Aden to stabilize the currency and facilitate civil servant salaries.

On 6 September, government forces recaptured the strategic Hais district south of Hodeidah, a vital link between the Hodeidah, Taiz, and Ibb provinces. The Yemeni Defence Ministry reportedly deployed new weapons systems as clashes continued. Rashad al-Alimi, chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, stated that government forces are capable of restoring full control, while the Ministry of Information reported that troops captured dozens of Houthi fighters during operations in the al-Jarahi district. Additionally, the Yemeni Navy reported destroying two explosive-laden boats in the Red Sea south of Al-Khokha, and the army conducted a strike on the Al-Lubnat military camp in Al-Jawf province using newly deployed specialized capabilities.
