Mexico State Ministry of Women faces scrutiny over gender violence response
During a legislative hearing regarding the third government report of Governor Delfina Gómez, María Esther Rodríguez Hernández, Secretary of Women for the State of Mexico, defended her administration's efforts to combat gender violence. The Secretary highlighted the implementation of 166 'Violeta' operations in 11 priority municipalities and reported reductions in certain crimes, such as sexual harassment (down 43%) and sexual abuse (down 8.75%). She also requested increased budget allocations to strengthen prevention and protection services.
However, legislators from various parties, including PAN, PRI, and PRD, criticized the current results. They pointed to high rates of violence, noting that the state leads the nation in victims of intentional injuries and domestic violence. Concerns were also raised regarding the number of missing women and the need for greater institutional coordination and transparency. While members of Morena and PVEM recognized the administration's public policies, opposition lawmakers demanded greater accountability and more effective measures to combat femicide and disappearances.
