Overview

Mexico is implementing various legislative and regional measures to enhance protections for women and combat gender-based violence.

At the national level, the National Electoral Institute (INE) is integrating gender perspectives into electoral processes to protect female candidates ahead of the 2026–2027 Federal Electoral Process. Simultaneously, the Gender Equality Commission has approved reforms to the General Law on Women's Access to a Life Free of Violence, which introduce human dignity, autonomy, and legal security as core pillars while addressing digital violence.

At the state level, regional governments are expanding support networks. In Tamaulipas, the former Women's Institute has been transformed into a Secretariat to bolster empowerment and care initiatives, supported by 24 LIBRE centers providing legal and social assistance. In Coahuila, the ‘Puntos Violeta’ network has expanded to over 600 locations, with efforts underway to include more businesses in the support system.
