88-year-old arrested for negligent fire in Grevena, Greece

On 4 July 2026, an 88‑year‑old man was detained in the Deskatia community of Grevena after a wheel used in work ignited vegetation, causing a fire. The suspect received a €1,546.88 administrative fine.

Greek fire‑prevention authorities noted that since 1 January 2026, 156 people have been arrested for forest fires, with 91.67 % of cases attributed to negligence, and 516 fines totalling €629,272.80 have been issued. The Fire Service’s Division for Arson Crimes continues intensive inspections and swift legal action to curb negligent fire‑setting.

The incident underscores ongoing concerns about human‑caused wildfires in Greece and the need for strict adherence to fire‑safety measures during work activities.
