8BitDo releases FlipPad USB‑C gamepad to turn smartphones into handheld consoles

8BitDo unveiled the FlipPad, a compact USB‑C controller that attaches directly to a smartphone and converts it into a Game Boy‑style handheld. The device, shown at CES in January 2026 alongside GameSir, is smaller and lighter than competing accessories and costs $29.99, with pre‑orders available through the 8BitDo online store and Amazon for a July 30, 2026 launch.

The FlipPad plugs into the phone’s USB‑C port via a hinge that folds flat, allowing the full screen to be used while the controller rests on the lower half of the display. It works with most thin cases on devices such as OnePlus and Google Pixel phones, though thicker cases may block use. The D‑pad and ABXY buttons are stiff with a short travel, and four shoulder buttons sit on the front edge. The controller supports vertical‑orientation games and can be used with emulators like RetroArch for Game Boy, GBA, NES, and Sega Genesis titles. The USB‑C connector is rated for over 10,000 insertions and the hinge for more than 6,000 cycles.
