8th Pay Commission begins consultations for Indian government employees

The 8th Central Pay Commission is currently in the consultation stage, preparing to hold discussions with central government employees, pensioner organizations, unions, and other stakeholders. The commission is expected to hold meetings in locations including Jaipur, Chennai, and Puducherry between late August and September.

Decisions made by the commission are expected to impact over 1 crore people, including approximately 50 lakh central government employees and 65 lakh pensioners, spanning sectors such as defense and railways. The commission is reviewing the pay structure, including basic pay, allowances like Dearness Allowance (DA) and House Rent Allowance (HRA), and other benefits.

A key point of discussion is the fitment factor, a multiplier used to convert current basic pay into the new revised structure. While the 7th Pay Commission utilized a fitment factor of 2.57, various employee and pensioner unions have requested factors ranging from 1.83 to 4.0. The commission is scheduled to submit its final report within 18 months from November 2025, or by May 2027, subject to central government approval.
