8th Pay Commission reviews employee demands for salary and pension reforms
The 8th Pay Commission, led by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, is conducting regional consultations across India, including recent meetings in Chennai, Puducherry, and upcoming sessions in Chandigarh. The commission is gathering stakeholder input ahead of its final report, which is expected by mid-2026.
Central government employee and pensioner associations have presented several key demands to combat inflation and protect purchasing power. A primary proposal is to shift the salary and pension revision cycle from every ten years to every five years.
Other significant demands include: • Increasing the frequency of Dearness Allowance (DA) increments from twice a year to four times a year. • Merging DA with basic pay once it reaches 25 percent, or when it reaches 50 percent, as requested by specific railway and teacher associations. • Implementing a higher fitment factor, with some groups suggesting a multiplier of 3.84 or 4.0. • Increasing annual salary increments to between 6 and 7 percent. • Expanding the family unit from three to five members for calculation purposes.
