A1 motorway Margina–Holdea section reaches 72% completion

Construction on the missing Margina–Holdea section of the A1 motorway in Romania has reached a 72% physical completion stage. The project, valued at 1.82 billion lei (excluding VAT) and funded through the PNRR, aims to complete a 360 km motorway connection between Boița, Sebeș, and the Nădlac western border.

Work on Tunnel 1 is nearing completion, with execution exceeding 90%. Both galleries have been breached, and crews are currently focusing on the road structure, drainage systems, and internal safety elements. Tunnel 2 is still undergoing excavation, with varying distances remaining for the left and right galleries.

On the road surface, the Romanian contractor UMB Spedition has begun laying the base layer on approximately 4 km of the section, utilizing roughly 3,000 tons of asphalt. Additionally, a precast beam factory has been established on-site to produce the 328 beams required for five structures, including three passages and two viaducts. The new tunnels will be equipped with modern safety systems, including smoke evacuation fans, emergency telephones, monitoring sensors, and fire hydrants.
