Suurhoffbrug structural cracks force emergency traffic measures on A15
Structural cracks discovered in the main girders of the western Suurhoffbrug on the A15 have forced Rijkswaterstaat to implement emergency traffic measures. For the next six to eight weeks, traffic heading toward the Maasvlakte must use the hard shoulder, effectively halving the capacity of this critical artery to the Port of Rotterdam.
Approximately 36,500 vehicles, including 15,500 trucks, use the bridge daily. The transport sector, represented by TLN, warns that a 30-minute delay on this route costs the industry roughly €600,000 per day. To mitigate congestion, authorities are investigating using the adjacent new Suurhoffbrug for two-way traffic as a temporary solution.
South Holland official Jeroen van Dijken stated that sufficient infrastructure investment could prevent such crises, noting that the national government faces significant funding gaps for maintenance and renewal. Rijkswaterstaat plans to construct a completely new bridge, which is scheduled for completion by 2032.
