A40 between Mülheim and Essen closed for a week for silent‑asphalt works

The A40 (Ruhrschnellweg) between the Mülheim‑Winkhausen interchange and the Essen‑Ost interchange is fully closed in both directions from Thursday 23 July 2026 20:00 until Thursday 30 July 2026 05:00. The closure enables the removal of 110 000 m² of damaged surface and the installation of a new open‑porous “Flüsterasphalt” over a 5.8 km stretch, intended to reduce road‑noise. Large‑scale detours are signed, routing traffic via the A52, A3, A524/A59 and other local roads; drivers are urged to follow the posted routes and avoid using navigation apps to find shortcuts. The works coincide with the holiday period to limit disruption. A similar closure of the same section occurred a month earlier for ten days, causing temporary congestion.
