German and Brenner Pass transport disruptions July‑Dec 2026

Overview

The nationwide construction programme that began in June continues to disrupt traffic across Germany through December. Deutsche Bahn’s five‑month renovation of the 160‑km right‑Rhine railway between Troisdorf and Wiesbaden runs to mid‑December, with helicopters installing new signals and expanded bus‑replacement services covering express routes and school‑hour trips. In the Brenner corridor the Autobahn remains single‑lane and the Innsbruck‑Verona railway is closed 17 July–1 August. Additional details confirm that the Bolzano‑Brenner and Bressanone‑Brenner sections are suspended from 18 July, with regional trains fully replaced by buses and long‑distance Frecciarossa and Intercity services either cancelled or truncated. Buses stop at every station and a non‑stop link between Bressanone and Fortezza speeds journeys. Hamburg’s S‑Bahn between Sternschanze and Altona is suspended from 17 July to 30 August. Replacement buses add up to 20 minutes; lines S2, S5 and S7 (temporarily S1) are rerouted, while S3 runs unchanged. Works include replacement of the historic Sternbrücke, refurbishment of railway bridges on Holsten‑ and Schanzenstraße, and upgrades at the new Altona station. Rhineland‑Palatinate has launched an accelerated bridge‑replacement programme covering about 5,700 bridges on federal, state and county roads, prioritising full replacements over repairs. The new Rader Hochbrücke on the A7 near Rendsburg saw its 118‑metre, 1,250‑ton centre span lifted into place over the Kiel Canal on the night of 14‑15 July. Heavy‑duty cranes positioned the segment on a pontoon; wind is the main risk but forecasts are favourable. The first span is slated to open to traffic in late 2026, with demolition of the old structure in 2025 and a second span planned for 2028. Additional road works began in late July: in Eppingen‑Adelshofen an 800‑metre stretch of Adelshofer Straße and adjoining L 550 are being overhauled in four sections over 22 months, with detours via B 293 and temporary loss of several bus stops.
