Germany 2026 road and rail construction updates
Overview
The 2026 infrastructure programme continues with extensive road and rail disruptions across Germany and surrounding Alpine routes. In late July and early August, the ADAC warned of severe holiday congestion due to approximately 1,000 construction sites. Major Alpine links faced significant delays, with the Gotthard Tunnel experiencing southbound queues of up to 11 km and northbound wait times exceeding three hours during the first week of August.
In Germany, specific regional projects intensified in August. On the A65, resurfacing work near Landau has restricted traffic to a single lane, with shifts to the opposing carriageway causing temporary exit and entrance closures. At the Walldorfer Kreuz, maintenance on connecting ramps and guardrail modernization is scheduled through mid-September, involving significant diversions for travelers toward Heidelberg and Frankfurt. In Bremen, reconstruction of the B6n arterial road began on 7 August, utilizing night-time full closures. Munich’s S-Bahn line S5 remains closed for bridge works until 16 October.
Bridge-related projects have reached new milestones. Demolition of the Vorlandbrücke at Bonn’s Nordbrücke (A565) commenced on 7 August. The firm Hagedorn is performing the demolition using excavators with shears and pulverisers to minimize noise.
In Dresden, the reconstruction of the Carolabrücke has progressed following its collapse in September 2024. After an advisory committee initially recommended a design by LAP and Knight Architects, the Dresden City Council ultimately approved a different proposal on 3 September. The selected design was submitted by a consortium consisting of FHECOR Deutschland and TSSB Planungsgesellschaft. The decision followed intense debate over costs, with some factions advocating for a smaller two-lane design or structures focused on trams and pedestrians to reduce the estimated 170 million euro investment. Legal counsel had previously cautioned that selecting high-risk designs could lead to challenges under German competition law.
