A40 Ruhrgebiet Road Closed for Week of Asphalt Upgrade
The A40 highway in Germany's Ruhr region will be fully closed from 23 July 20:00 until 30 July 05:00 while “flüsterasphalt” – a low‑noise road surface – is installed on the 5.8‑km stretch between the Mülheim‑Winkhausen interchange and the Essen‑Ost junction. The autobahn authority has posted extensive detour routes, directing traffic from Dortmund to Duisburg via the A52, A3, A524/A59 and other connections, while drivers heading toward Dortmund are routed through the centres of Mülheim and Essen. Motorists are urged to follow the posted signs and not to seek alternate shortcuts with navigation devices. Park‑only zones will be enforced on the detour roads to keep traffic flowing. The closure was scheduled during the holiday period to minimise impact on commuters, and the work will replace the roadway surface on an area of about 110 000 m² – roughly the size of 15 football fields.
