Sami Zayn defeats CM Punk for WWE Championship in Mexico City
Sami Zayn regained the Undisputed WWE Championship by defeating CM Punk during the September 11 episode of SmackDown in Mexico City. The match at Arena CDMX featured significant interference from Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae, and Kevin Owens. The chaotic finish saw Owens accidentally strike Punk with a title belt, allowing Zayn to secure the win with a Helluva Kick.
Following the loss, CM Punk addressed the defeat on social media, stating that while he is disappointed to end his 67-day reign at age 47, he remains motivated to reclaim the title. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete in Mexico and announced his intention to pursue the championship again in Corpus Christi.
The title change has drawn significant online attention due to the timing of the event on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Some observers and former performer Val Venis have raised controversial claims regarding the intersection of Zayn’s Muslim heritage and the date of the championship win.
