IMF issues updated economic forecasts for Greece, Cyprus, and global debt levels

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has released its World Economic Outlook, providing updated economic projections for Greece, Cyprus, the Eurozone, and the global economy.

In Greece, the IMF forecasts a steady GDP growth rate of 1.8% for both 2026 and 2027, which is more conservative than government estimates. However, inflation is expected to rise to 4.2% in 2026 due to energy price volatility, before declining to 3.6% in 2027. Unemployment in Greece is projected to decrease to 8% in 2026 and 7.6% in 2027.

For Cyprus, the IMF projects GDP growth of 2.9% in 2026 and 3.2% in 2027. Inflation in Cyprus is expected to reach 3.7% this year and drop to 1.9% in 2027. The unemployment rate is anticipated to be 4% in 2026 and 4.4% in 2027.

The Eurozone's growth is projected at 1.1% for 2026 and 1.2% for 2027. While the IMF shows optimism for some major economies like Germany and Spain, it has revised growth forecasts downward for France.

On a global scale, the IMF warns that global public debt could approach 100% of global GDP by 2030. It specifically calls for urgent fiscal measures in advanced economies, such as the United States, to ensure debt sustainability as borrowing costs rise. Global economic growth is predicted to be 3.1% in 2026 and 3.4% in 2027.
