Aamir Khan to receive Screen Icon Award at Singapore Film Festival

The 37th Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), scheduled from October 21 to November 1, 2026, will honor Bollywood actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan with the Screen Icon Award. The award recognizes Asian actors for their significant creative contributions to cinema.

As part of the festival, there will be a special presentation marking the 25th anniversary of the acclaimed 2001 film ‘Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India’. Khan will attend the screening alongside director Ashutosh Gowariker. The film, which was nominated for an Academy Award, tells the story of Indian villagers challenging British colonial tax through a cricket match.

Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda will also be honored with the Cinema Honorary Award, and his film ‘Look Back’ is set to make its Southeast Asian premiere. The festival will open with the South Korean thriller ‘The Assassin(s)’, directed by Hur Jin-ho and starring Yoo Hae-jin, Park Hae-il, and Lee Min-ho.

SGIFF Executive Director Jeremy Chua noted that this edition focuses on showcasing premier talent and introducing new presentation formats and intuitive ticketing platforms to enhance audience engagement.
