ABB and Rolls-Royce SMR partner on nuclear automation

ABB and Rolls-Royce SMR have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the integration of automation, electrification, instrumentation, and communication solutions for a planned fleet of small modular reactors (SMRs). The collaboration aims to support the scaling of Rolls-Royce SMR’s standardized, factory-built approach to nuclear project delivery.

Each Rolls-Royce SMR unit is designed as a pressurized water reactor capable of generating 470 MW of low-carbon electricity, which could power one million UK homes for 60 years. The company is currently engaged in site-specific design activities for three units in North Wales.

Rolls-Royce SMR is also expanding its international footprint, working with ČEZ to deploy SMRs at Temelín in the Czech Republic, with potential further sites at Tušimice and Dětmarovice. Additionally, Videberg Kraft has selected the company to deliver three SMRs on Sweden’s Värö Peninsula. The ABB collaboration will be managed through ABB’s UK operations based in Warrington.
