ABB to supply propulsion for Allseas heavy transport vessel

ABB has secured a contract with Guangzhou Shipyard International to provide an integrated power and propulsion package for the Grand Tour, a 230-meter semi-submersible heavy transport vessel (HTV) ordered by Allseas. Scheduled for delivery in 2028, the vessel will play a critical role in the offshore wind energy logistics chain by transporting large converter stations from fabrication sites in Asia and Europe to the construction vessel Pioneering Spirit for installation.

The Grand Tour is designed to carry loads of up to 40,000 metric tons. During operations, the vessel will position itself alongside the Pioneering Spirit and lower its main deck below the waterline to allow converter stations to float directly onto the construction vessel.

ABB’s technical supply includes four 3.5MW nozzled Azipod propulsion units. These units provide 360-degree rotation to support the vessel’s bollard pull and dynamic positioning needs, ensuring precise maneuvering during cargo transfers. The gearless Azipod design is intended to reduce mechanical losses, fuel consumption, noise, and vibration, while also minimizing the need for lubrication oil and maintenance.
