ABB maritime propulsion technology contracts

Overview

ABB has secured multiple maritime technology contracts involving Guangzhou Shipyard International for the provision of power and propulsion systems.

In August 2026, ABB was contracted to supply an integrated power and propulsion package for the ‘Grand Tour’, a 230-meter semi-submersible heavy transport vessel ordered by Allseas. The vessel, scheduled for 2028 delivery, will support offshore wind energy logistics by transporting converter stations. The technical supply includes four 3.5MW nozzled Azipod propulsion units designed for precise maneuvering and reduced mechanical losses.

In September 2026, ABB was selected as the technology partner for two new Ro-Pax ferries, the Kupe and Cook, for New Zealand’s Cook Strait Ferry Replacement Program. Also to be constructed by Guangzhou Shipyard International, these vessels are expected in 2029. The ferries will feature a fuel-agnostic hybrid-electric power plant and an 8.2 MWh battery energy storage system to support near-zero-emission operations and reduce underwater noise.
