Queensland floods: ABC reporter and bystander rescue driver from sinking car

Severe storms and record-breaking rainfall in southeast Queensland, Australia, have triggered widespread flash flooding, leading to hundreds of emergency calls, school closures, and infrastructure damage. In Morayfield, north of Brisbane, ABC journalist Will Murray and bystander Daniel Hainey performed a dramatic rescue when a four-wheel-drive vehicle stalled and began to sink in floodwaters on Buchanan Road.

Murray, who was reporting on the weather at the time, handed his phone to camera operator Liz Pickering and entered the water after realizing the driver was in immediate danger. Alongside Hainey, Murray attempted to open the vehicle's doors and considered breaking the rear window before successfully forcing open the rear passenger-side door. The driver was pulled to safety moments before the vehicle became completely submerged.

Meteorologists reported that some areas received up to 250 mm of rain within 24 hours, with Beerburrum recording its wettest October day on record. The heavy rainfall caused 418 SES call-outs and forced the closure of 14 schools. Authorities have warned residents to prepare for potential evacuations as new storm systems threaten the region with supercells.
