Queensland flash flooding and rescue incident

Overview

Severe storms and record-breaking rainfall in southeast Queensland, Australia, triggered widespread flash flooding, causing infrastructure damage, school closures, and hundreds of emergency calls. Some areas recorded up to 250 mm of rain within 24 hours, with Beerburrum marking its wettest October day on record.

During the flooding in Morayfield, ABC journalist Will Murray and bystander Daniel Hainey performed a rescue when a four-wheel-drive vehicle stalled and began to sink on Buchanan Road. Murray, who was reporting on the weather, entered the water to assist in forcing open a door, allowing the driver to be pulled to safety moments before the vehicle became completely submerged.

The incident gained international media attention, and authorities used the event to warn the public about the deceptive dangers of driving through flooded roads.
