Turkey advances energy goals with gas discovery and new production platform

The Abdülhamid Han deep-sea drilling vessel has completed four years of service in Turkey’s ‘Blue Homeland’ waters. Since its deployment in August 2022, the vessel has completed 20 drilling operations across the Mediterranean and Black Seas. A major milestone was reached on May 17, 2025, when the vessel discovered 75 billion cubic meters of natural gas at the Göktepe-3 well, bringing the total natural gas reserves in the Black Sea to 785 billion cubic meters. The vessel is currently conducting operations at the Türkali-44 well.

In parallel, Turkey is advancing its energy infrastructure with the Osman Gazi Floating Production Platform. Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced that the assembly of the 260-ton Alev Tower, a critical safety component, has been completed. The Osman Gazi platform is expected to be deployed by the end of September, with the goal of doubling daily natural gas production in the Sakarya Gas Field to meet the needs of 8 million households. The government aims to increase daily production to 45 million cubic meters by 2028 through additional floating platforms.
