Turkey energy independence and expansion strategy
Overview
Turkey is pursuing an international energy strategy to achieve energy independence, focusing on expanding the production capacity of the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO). Internationally, TPAO has acquired a 15% stake in BP Energy Company of Kirkuk Limited in Iraq and has decided to proceed with drilling in Somalia following seismic research. Other areas of interest include Libya, Oman, Azerbaijan, and Hungary.
Domestically, Turkey is advancing its natural gas capabilities through deep-sea drilling and infrastructure development. The Abdülhamid Han vessel has completed 20 drilling operations, contributing to Black Sea natural gas reserves that total 785 billion cubic meters. To support these reserves, the government is deploying the Osman Gazi Floating Production Platform, which is expected to help double daily natural gas production in the Sakarya Gas Field to meet the needs of 8 million households.
