Abelardo de la Espriella assumes Colombian presidency
Abelardo de la Espriella has officially assumed the presidency of Colombia for the 2026–2030 term, with an inauguration ceremony held in Cali. In his first 15 days of governance, the administration has implemented several significant policy shifts and economic measures.
Following a meeting with major Colombian business leaders in Barranquilla, an agreement was reached to reduce mortgage interest rates to 8% effective annual for families affected by recent earthquakes. This rate will remain fixed for the entire duration of the loans. Additionally, the president announced a plan to visit the Chocó department on September 7 to design a regional recovery plan.
Economic and institutional changes include the authorization of Colombian coal exports to Israel and the removal of previous administration delegates from the country's Chambers of Commerce. Furthermore, the government announced a restructuring of ProColombia, which will close its independent international offices and integrate its functions into Colombian embassies and consulates to reduce costs and increase diplomatic commercial activity.
On security, the administration reported multiple successful military and police operations against organized crime. These actions, targeting groups such as Clan del Golfo and La Terraza in regions including Antioquia and Valle del Cauca, resulted in several arrests and fatalities, as well as the seizure of weapons and narcotics.
