Milei's Latin America diplomatic tour

Entities: Argentina · Daniel Noboa · Javier Milei · Abelardo de la Espriña · Chone Killers

Overview

Argentina’s President Javier Milei began a two‑day diplomatic tour of Latin America on 6 August 2026 with a visit to Quito, Ecuador. He and President Daniel Noboa paid tribute at the Plaza de la Independencia and held a bilateral meeting that produced a suite of agreements covering the automotive sector (preferential tariffs of 0‑10 % for vehicles and zero for more than 140 auto‑parts categories), air services, extradition, peaceful nuclear‑energy cooperation, cyber‑defence and a joint declaration on illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. The automotive protocol is projected to double Argentine vehicle exports to Ecuador and marked the first Argentine presidential trip to Ecuador since 2007. Milei’s delegation also met with Argentine automotive industry representatives and opened an economic forum at the Swissôtel.

After the Ecuador stop, Milei travelled overnight to Cali, Colombia, to attend the inauguration of President‑elect Abelardo de la Espriella on 7 August. In Cali he held a bilateral meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and a separate discussion with de la Espriella, underscoring the tour’s broader regional outreach amid heightened diplomatic tension with Brazil.

Later that day Milei returned to Ecuador to formalise a trade pact with President Noboa and, in parallel, Argentina added the Ecuadorian criminal group known as the Chone Killers to its Public Registry of Persons and Entities Linked to Terrorism, signalling a coordinated security dimension to the bilateral relationship.

The tour highlights Argentina’s push to deepen economic and security ties with like‑minded governments across the region.
