Abelardo de la Espriella elected president as Colombia shifts right

Iván Cepeda, the defeated left‑wing candidate, publicly recognized Abelardo de la Espriella as the new president of Colombia, describing the concession as a democratic responsibility three days after preliminary results showed his narrow loss.

The official count by the Registraduría confirmed Espriella’s victory by a margin of roughly 250,000 votes, the closest presidential race in Colombia’s history. Outgoing president Gustavo Petro and Cepeda’s supporters had alleged fraud, but independent observers and the electoral authority dismissed the claims.

The result signals a rightward turn for Colombia, joining recent wins of outsider right‑leaning candidates in Argentina, Bolivia and Chile, and raises questions about how the new administration will address the country’s longstanding violence and crime challenges.
