Colombia 2026: transition, peace reforms, political rifts

Overview

President‑elect Abelardo De La Espriella secured a World Bank‑IMF package in July and, after inauguration, formed a largely conservative cabinet. He dissolved the High Commissioner for Peace and announced the removal of the Presidential Advisory for Reconciliation, the Advisory for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Peace, cutting about 229 positions and saving roughly 10 billion pesos a year. The United Nations Mission warned that the moves create a “critical moment for the peace process” as armed violence rises and threats to social leaders increase. Critics such as Senator Iván Cepeda filed a criminal complaint accusing the president‑elect of aggravated harassment, defamation and incitation to crime.

De La Espriella also demanded a life sentence for former FARC commander Rodrigo Londoño (“Timochenko”), prompting the director of the peace‑implementation unit to call for an Attorney‑General investigation. He backed Party of the U senator Alfredo Deluque for the Congress presidency, provoking a split with former president Álvaro Uribe’s Centro Democrático bloc.

Domestically, a Contraloría audit uncovered about 33 billion pesos in fiscal irregularities and under‑execution at the Victims Unit (UARIV). Internationally, De La Espriña met U.S. congress members and, together with the Inter‑American Development Bank, launched the “Colombia Crece” strategy to attract private investment.

Former President Gustavo Petro announced he would not attend De La Espriña’s August 7 inauguration, citing alleged vote‑fraud, and apologized for past state surveillance of journalist Hollman Morris. The administration continues to promote the Banco de Talentos de la Patria Milagro platform, which recorded over 115 000 registrations as a merit‑based staffing tool.

Human‑rights groups warn that dismantling peace institutions could erode protections for social leaders and former combatants.
