Colombia: De la Espriella administration implements security and digital reforms
The administration of Abelardo de la Espriella in Colombia is implementing several strategic shifts regarding security, digital governance, and social policy. In security, the government reported 32,503 arrests during its first two months, including the seizure of over 125,000 kilograms of cocaine and the disruption of 679 drug production sites. However, critics have raised concerns regarding the legitimacy of the election and the potential for centralized communication to act as censorship.
To modernize the state, Nubank co-founder David Vélez has accepted a pro bono advisory role to promote digital transformation and artificial intelligence within public services. Additionally, Vice President José Manuel Restrepo has proposed a cooperation agreement with Microsoft to provide AI training for Colombian youth and adults.
On the social and peace-building front, former President Juan Manuel Santos has defended the budget of the Unit for the Search of Disappeared Persons (UBPD) against government proposals to redistribute funds. Santos emphasized the entity's role in recovering thousands of bodies and locating living persons following the peace agreement with the FARC.
