Abelardo de la Espriella legal team convenes urgent health sector summit in Colombia

In response to a deepening crisis in Colombia's health insurance model, the legal team of lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella organized an urgent summit with representatives from health sector unions, patient groups, and public policy experts. Participants examined the financial and operational challenges faced by the country's health promoters (EPS) and hospitals, highlighting delayed funding, administrative interventions, and regulatory uncertainty.

The summit aimed to develop a technical roadmap to prevent institutional collapse, proposing three pillars: legal oversight to ensure transparent use of public health funds, permanent technical committees linking service providers and users to address treatment failures, and a sustainability plan with financing alternatives to be presented to regulators. Delegates called on the national government to open unbiased technical dialogue to protect patients' rights and maintain essential services such as medication supply, surgeries, and high‑complexity consultations.
