Abelardo de la Espriella to be sworn in at Cali's Arena USC on Aug 7
President‑elect Abelardo de la Espriella announced that his inauguration will take place on 7 August 2026 in the city of Cali, using the Arena USC of Universidad Santiago de Cali as the venue. The change from the originally planned locations in Popayán and a military base was justified by volcanic ash from the Puracé volcano that made travel to Popayán unsafe and raised security concerns.
The Colombian Chamber of Representatives approved the temporary relocation of the congressional plenary to Cali with 117 votes in favour, seven against and 59 abstentions, clearing the way for the ceremony at the 2,200‑plus‑seat arena. The president‑elect also said the historic Casa de Nariño will become an open public museum, while the presidential office will move to the Palacio de San Carlos in Bogotá. A special manager will be appointed for Bogotá to resolve pending projects, and De la Espriella proposes that Barranquilla be recognised as an alternate capital and a permanent presidential headquarters. Additionally, retired General Jorge Eduardo Mora López is slated to assume the defence ministry on the inauguration day.
